HPR's All Things Considered Interview Flashback: Remembering Ellis Marsalis Through His Son Delfeayo

Some of the many casualties from the coronavirus have been popular musicians, including previous guests of HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence, and in some cases, their parents. Last week we paid tribute to music pioneer and onetime guest 86-year old Manu Dibango, then yesterday said goodbye to 52-year old rocker Adam Schlesinger of the band Fountains of Wayne, also a previous guest. Also passing away from the coronavirus yesterday was 85-year old New Orleans patriarch Ellis Marsalis.

The gifted musician and educator leaves behind not only his own musical legacy, but some legendary musical children, including Branford, Wynton, Jason and Delfeayo Marsalis. In 2017, Delfeayo was our guest in HPR’s Atherton Studio. He not only played live, but shared a story about his upbringing and another of his siblings who has autism, and how having a brother with that intellectual disability inspired him to give back.

Below you can hear and watch that story as part of his complete interview/performance session.
