Roy Hargrove Interview Flashback on Hawaii Public Radio's All Things Considered

Today on HPR's All Things Considered, Host Dave Lawrence remembers a jazz icon who passed away a few days ago, and was a memorable guest on the show. During all the election news coverage, the passing of jazz trumpet icon Roy Hargrove didn’t get a lot of exposure. According to the Dallas Observer, the Texas native passed away at age 49 this past Friday due to cardiac arrest, brought on by complications from kidney disease. The newspaper said he reportedly had been on dialysis for 13 years. In January 2016, he was our guest when he played the Blue Note Hawaii, and we remember Roy today by flashing back to that conversation.

Roy explained  how his love of music was nurtured early on in life, thanks to his father, and detailed critical roles that music education, both formal and informal, played in his development. He also reflects on some of his favorite accomplishments, from being commissioned by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra to write The Love Suite: In Mahoganyto his experience of collaborating with Cuban piano master Chucho Valdes.
