Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations each Friday afternoon and then available online here. As part of our statewide airing of the NPR afternoon drive program All Things Considered, ATC Local Host Dave Lawrence puts the spotlight on an organization or event that offers assistance to the disabled and others who are among the most vulnerable in the community. This week we’re learning about an event presented by Mental Health Kokua to help out in the fight against homelessness -- ARISE: CONCERT TO HELP END HOMELESSNESS IN CHINATOWN. Their CEO Greg Payton joins us a returning guest.
This special event will feature meet and greet opportunities with both elected officials and clients of Mental Health Kokua, films about their efforts to assist the homeless, a portrait gallery, silent auction and other ways to learn about and support the goal of ending homelessness. The fundraiser for Mental Health K?kua is tonight, June 5th at the Hawai‘i Theatre. Keola & Moana Beamer and The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau will perform live. All proceeds will provide homeless individuals in Chinatown with mental health services, and ongoing treatment. Tickets are available at the Hawai'i Theatre Box Office and online.
