Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide and online in our growing resource of archived segments. Each Friday afternoon at 5:30, Helping Hand offers a profile of another organization, event or topic in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and most vulnerable with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence. This week we’re learning about Hawai‘i Fido Service Dogs with our guests Susan Luehrs, Program Director, and Jim Kennedy, the new Executive Director.
Hawai’i Fido Service Dogs is a nonprofit corporation, that they describe as being built with volunteers from the ground up. They note that they are the only Certified Training Center in the Honolulu area and in 2008 were Internationally Accredited under ADI -- Assistance Dogs International. We’ll learn more about their mission to breed and successfully train assistance dogs to provide physical, medical and therapeutic support for people who face the daily challenges of life with a disability other than blindness.
