Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide and online here in our growing online directory. Each Friday afternoon, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization or event in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks in need. This week, HPR All Things Considered Local Host Dave Lawrence returns to the topic of homelessness, with our guest Jerry Coffee, Clinical Director at the Institute for Human Services, also known to many simply as IHS.
Homelessness in the islands, over the last several years, has emerged as a major crisis, particularly in Honolulu. In fact, according to some statistics, Honolulu ranks at the top of tallies of homeless populations in major U.S. cities. This week the Homeless Point In Time Count has been underway in the Aloha State, with research being conducted to assess the latest figures of who is on the streets and in shelters in the state of Hawai'i. IHS – Institute of Human Services have areas of assistance based around emergency shelter services, specialized case management, community food programs, children's enrichment services, outreach services, housing placement services, employment services, and health services.
