Tavana ReturnsSaturday, May 4th at 7:30pmPresented with Mana'o RadioCome hear one of Hawai'i's finest musicians in Maui's best listening room! Tavana is a multi-instrumentalist Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Nominee from Honolulu, HI who uses his feet to lay down a variety of grooves while simultaneously playing guitar, banjo, lap steel, or ukulele and singing soulful, island-inspired Rock and Blues.
Tavana has been the supporting act for Alabama Shakes, Shakey Graves, Xavier Rudd, Jenny Lewis, Julian Marley, and Kaleo to name just a few, and In 2009, Eddie Vedder invited Tavana to sing 'Hawaii 78' - a Hawaii anthem of sorts - with him at the Hawaii Theatre. "He's more the exception than the rule, he is a great human and I'm glad to know him" said Vedder while introducing Tavana to the audience. From a recording of their performance together, Vedder produced a limited vinyl record that was sent out to 10,000 Pearl Jam fans.

Kabuki – Celebrating 100 years of Kabuki in English at UHM!
Written by Kawatake Mokuami
Translator, Adaptor, and Project Director: Julie A. Iezzi
Artistic Advisor: Ichikawa Monnosuke VIII
April 19-20 & 26-28, 2024 – FRI/SAT 7:30pm & SUN 2:00pm
Pre-Show Chats: 6:45pm before Saturday 4/20 & 4:27 performances
This popular kabuki play, commonly known as Benten Kozō, features five distinctive thieves with a mastery of masquerade, and a command of language from the gutter to the poetically sublime. Together with a full array of colorful kabuki characters, their schemes and back stories lead to shocking revelations, surprising reunions, startling twists and ultimately result in the realization that one cannot escape karma—though in meeting it, one need not abandon spectacle or beauty.
This production celebrates the long tradition of kabuki in Hawaiʻi, and marks the 100th anniversary of English-language kabuki productions at the University of Hawaiʻi as well as Kennedy Theatreʻs 60th birthday. Benten Kozō, presented in the 1963-64 inaugural season, is also a magnificent showcase for the hanamichi, an acting pathway through the audience which fosters an intimacy between actors and audience members. To this day, Kennedy Theatre remains the only theatre in the United States designed with a hanamichi. As in the previous 100 years, we are fortunate and grateful to bring community artists, guest artists from Japan, and UHM faculty, staff and students together to collaborate and ensure that regional “Hawaiʻi kabuki” thrives for the next 100 years.

Discover the quiet beauty of 'Stillness in Motion' at Blue Hawai'i Lifestyle, Ala Moana Center. 📸 Join us in appreciating the delicate interplay between tranquility and activity, as captured by our talented Hawaiʻi-based artists.
This humble exhibition invites you to reflect on the simplicity of observation, finding stillness in motion within our island environment. Embrace the subtle stories told through the lens of local creators.
German-born artist Max Ernst was a key figure in the movements of Dada and Surrealism that took place in Europe in early part of the 20th century. This exhibition highlights Ernst’s role in the development of these historical art movements through a selection of sculptures, prints, and a series of tapestries by Yvette Cauquil-Prince, who worked closely with the artist to translate his paintings into large-scale woven textiles. With a number of rarely exhibited works from Ernst’s wide-spanning career, the experience will provide windows of insight into his working process and his life spent in Sedona, including original concrete frieze sculptures that were embedded into the walls of his home. The exhibit is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free. The exhibit will be closed the following days: April 19, April 27, May 10-11, and May 18.
