The Volcano Art Center’s Jazz in the Forest series continues on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 5:30 pm at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
"Take a Giant Step Outside Your Mind-a history of jazz guitar music" will feature internationally known and respected guitarist and vocalist Benny Yutake, along with JP and the Jazztones.
The guitar has been a popular instrument for hundreds of years throughout the world, in various forms. We will visit many of the primary composers and performers, beginning with Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, and Taj Mahal, who gave us the song titling this program. We will then move along with Delta Blues from the South, to international influences with Django Reinhardt, and Hawaiian; to the development of jazz styles through the last century including the blues, as jazz moved up the river to Chicago, with Muddy Waters, Joe Turner, and T Bone Walker.
Then we are going to have fun with rock and roll as it changed the world during the 50's. Please come and experience our broadly drawn picture of this musical development.
The Jazztones will also feature JP Thoma on saxophones and clarinet, Joey Carroll on vocals, acoustic as well as electric bass, and Owen Matsui on percussion.
Tickets are $25 for VAC members ($30 non-members)! Ticket holders will be able to purchase pupu, beer and wine. Tickets are available for sale online at www.volcanoartcenter.org, or at VAC’s Administration Office in Volcano Village.

Windward Community College and Hawaiʻi Conservatory of Performing Arts present Medea / Antigone Now, directed by Taurie Kinoshita, at Palikū Theatre from April 26 through May 5.
This new adaptation of Medea by Tadashi Kerren is based on the mythic characters from Euripides’ classic tale. The story explores revenge and emotional responses to oppression. Medea sacrifices her family, her country, and her friends to help her husband Jason become a great hero. Two children later, Jason leaves Medea for another woman, breaking his vows and standing silently as she is cast out of the country she made her own. The story is told through flashbacks, combat scenes and humor, all while touching on issues of immigration.
Antigone Now by Melissa Cooper is inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone, presenting an updated version of the myth where a woman sacrifices her life to take action against an unjust law. In this adaptation, Antigone considers the struggle between universal human rights and the arbitrary laws of society.
“Though I chose these plays because of their relevance and timelessness, they’re also extremely moving…we don’t expect very many dry eyes!” said Kinoshita.
The play is recommended for ages 16+ and runs approximately 2 hours.
