Vespers on the Lanai: Palapū St. Band & Ka’anohiwaiānuenue Hula Studio
Join us in person from 7-8pm for Kailua's own Palapū Street Band and Ka’anohiwaiānuenue Hula Studio! It will be a one of a kind Vespers on the Lānai, featuring beautiful and meaningful oli, mele and hula by performers rooted in Kailua. Come immerse in a true sense of place, and a night full of aloha.
We will be inside, with seating provided. However, as we expect a full crowd, there will be overflow seating available on the lawn - please bring a lawn chair or blanket if you prefer to sit there. Masks are optional and picnics are welcome (both outside and inside). Please just be mindful of your neighbors' well-being.
ONLINE VIEWERS: Normally we livestream the event, but due to technical issues this week we will not be able to for Friday's event. We will, however, be recording the event and will upload the video to our website and social media pages at a later date. Mahalo for your understanding and patience.
Kumu Ka’anohi (Hilary Ann Ka’anohiwaiānuenue Stephenson Aipa) founded Ka’anohiwaiānuenue Hula Studio in 1980. Born in Honolulu, raised in Kailua and at her Grandpa Stephenson’s country home next to Barber’s Point Lighthouse on O’ahu, Kumu Ka’anohi resides in Kailua with her husband Nathan Aipa; they have raised three sons and are now grandparents. Since birth, Ka’anohi was immersed in Hawaiian music, practices, and hula. Besides her family mentors, Ka’anohi had the privilege of learning hula and mele under Mama Caroline Tuck, Aunty Aloma Kadooka, Aunty Bella Richards, Aunty Edith Kanaka’ole, Aunty Irmgard Aluli, Kumu Kaha’i Topolinski and Kumu John Keola Lake over a span of almost 40 years. Kumu Ka’anohi has served as a cultural practitioner in the Hawaii DOE Elementary School Hawaiian Studies programs, workshops, blessings, as well as teaching Hawaiian culture and traditions through hula, mele, oli, and ‘ōlelo in an environment of aloha, sharing, mutual respect and cooperation. Kumu Ka'anohi will be joined by Ka’anohiwaiānuenue Hula Studio Alaka'i: Mahealani Akina, Ku’uleialoha Souza, Kaui Yokoi, Nohealani Zeffiro and Jenn Hirokawa.

Vespers on the Lānai is a casual event combining great music with an opportunity for spiritual reflection; this FREE, family-friendly, music series happens the 2nd Friday of certain months. Featuring a different musical genre at each event, interspersed briefly with poetry and contemplative readings, we’ll think broadly together and folks of all faiths (or no faith in particular) and all ages should feel welcome.
