Talk-story and book-signing with author Jerry Mander and activist Palikapu Dedman
Author Jerry Mander will be joined by Pele Defense Fund president Palikapu Dedman to discuss Jerry’s latest book, “70 Ads to Save the World,” at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25 at the Honokaa People’s Theater.
Jerry is perhaps the nation’s most experienced activist advertiser. He co-founded the first nonprofit ad agency in the U.S. and is a lifelong environmentalist and critic of capitalism. The book, “70 Ads to Save the World,” gives engaging behind-the-scenes looks into the opposite worlds of advertising and nonprofits, describing the backstories of effective ads for groups such as the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, and Friends of the Earth. Yet the undisputed stars of this book are the socially conscious advertisements themselves, which are reprinted in full-page, high-quality images and deal with topics from animal rights and the environment to gun control. Indigenous voices and perspectives, also heard in Mander’s previous books, are highlighted in critiques of environmental degradation and unfettered capitalism.
One of Mander’s most successful campaigns was an ad produced for the Pele Defense Fund, co-founded by Palikapu Dedman. Pali will tell the story of how the ad stopped a geothermal company from constructing a power plant amidst an old-growth rain forest.
Mander's earlier books include "Four Arguments to Eliminate Television" and "In the Absence of the Sacred."
After the talk-story, Mander will be on hand to sign books.
