Queen's Surf Beach Historic Plaque Dedication Ceremony
Queen's Surf Beach Historic Plaque Dedication Ceremony
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi invites the community to attend a special ceremony at Queen’s Surf Beach in Waikīkī on Wednesday, June 4, at 4 p.m. A new historical plaque will be unveiled to celebrate and honor the significance of the site to our LGBTQ+ Māhū communities. Queen’s Surf Beach was the site of Hawaiʻi’s first organized LGBTQ+ Māhū events, beginning with a celebration of a Pride Parade through Waikīkī in 1974.
Please join Lei Pua 'Ala Queer Histories of Hawai'i & Hawai'i LGBT Legacy Foundation for Wednesday’s ceremony, which will feature several speakers with powerful stories about their connections to the historic Queen’s Surf Beach, along with a traditional Hawaiian blessing.
This location will be the newest in a series of physical and digital historical markers created by Lei Pua ʻAla Queer Histories of Hawaiʻi project. The historical marker is on the Waikīkī side of the Waikīkī Aquarium at 2777 Kalākaua Ave.
