The Hilo Lei Day Festival, a community cultural event celebrates lei culture, native and lei plants, sustainable horticulture, and our island's biodiversity.
The Festival has celebrated lei culture for many years in downtown Hilo with live Hawaiian music, hula, lei-making demonstrations, and a lei contest. Always held on May 1st at Kalakaua Park, the festival is attended by hundreds of kama`aina and visitors alike. Hilo Lei Day celebrations have a long history at Kalakaua Park, dating as far back as the 1930s.
