It’s been a week since 8-thousand workers at Marriott Hotels walked out on strike at 8 cities around the country. Here in Hawai‘i, 27-hundred workers are walking the picket lines outside 5 hotels managed by Marriott and owned by Kyo-Ya. They are demanding higher wages, protections against sexual harassment, and automation.
There have been several labor disputes in Hawaii’s hotel industry over the past 30 years. The largest strike against local hotels in recent history was in 1990 - when 75 hundred workers from the union Local 5 picketed 11 hotels. That strike lasted 3 weeks.
Every strike is different, takes a toll on both sides. Since Local 5 is on the picket line again, we wanted to find out what happens behind the scenes during a strike. We get some background from HPR’s Ryan Finnerty.

Equal Win Pay for Women Surfers
Equality on the waves? The World Surf League announced last month that it will offer the same prize money amount to women, that is paid to male surfers.
From Los Angeles, we spoke with Jessi Miley Dyer, the Deputy Commissioner for the World Surf League’s Women’s Tour about the League’s decision.
But not everyone agrees the move means parity. Big wave surfer Fred Hemmings has a different view about equality on the waves.
