A new rental high-rise is in the works near Ala Moana Center. It’s the first in the area to seek zoning that puts it in the category of Transit Oriented Development.

The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation recently released a revised draft plan to make extensive renovations to Ala Moana Regional Park. Public pushback to the initial parking plan triggered the changes.

Starting today through Sunday, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center is staging a pop up in the old Foodland location at Ala Moana Center.  Audiences are invited to hear and see over fifty artists and thinkers from across the country and Hawai‘i filling the space with their work.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa stopped by for a preview.

Pa’i Foundation Gallery at Kālia is an enclave for Native Hawaiian art at the center of the mall level at Ala Moana Center.   They’ve made it easy to catch the MAMo Juried Exhibit of ceramics, glass, paintings, photographs, wearable art, and more.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports.

Ala Moana Center has invested nearly half a billion dollars in new stores and parking, but not without some growing pains. Pacific Business News Editor in Chief A. Kam Napier has more.

If you’ve ever remodeled your home you know how difficult it can be to carry on with business as usual while the place is half torn up. Since late 2013, Ala Moana Center has been on an extensive remodel, converting the former Sears space in into an entirely new wing while adding 1,250 new parking spaces.

In the run up through November, Fashion Month, Ala Moana Center is celebrating different facets of Hawai‘i’s fashion industry in a new pop up called the Fashion Annex.  The current exhibition features a view of fashion that is both ancient and possibly futuristic.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa explores the idea of clothing that integrates understanding of culture, materials, and place.

Honolulu City and Council officials are looking for the public’s feedback on a renovation plan to Ala Moana Beach Park.

A nine point plan announced last year has already made improvements to the park.  But last week the city released a draft plan that would redesign the 948 existing parking, switching to angled stalls near the McCoy Pavillion.

  Shopping is more than necessity or recreation for Americans, the global economy relies on American consumption and this is the height of the season.  Locally, retail accounts for 25% of Hawai‘i’s workforce and is the largest contributor to the state’s excise tax revenue.
