State-funded preschool program scores in top tier nationally

Hawai‘i’s state-funded preschool program scored in the top tier of a national ranking by the National Institute for Early Education Research. The state was one of six to achieve all 10 benchmarks for quality early education. Deborah Zysman, executive director at the Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network, talked to us about what this means going forward.

Domestic Violence Action Center helping families in need for 30 years

When Honolulu police responded to a domestic violence case in Makiki last week, the first thing Nanci Kreidman of the Domestic Violence Action Center wondered was if the woman had a safety plan and knew her options. For 30 years, the center has helped families in need. Kreidman shared how the problem has been exacerbated by the pandemic.

UH Cancer Center on racial and ethnic disparities

The University of Hawaii Cancer Center prides itself on research on the diverse communities across the islands--Native Hawaiian men have higher rates of liver cancer, and thyroid cancer seems to strike more Filipino women. UH Cancer Center's Brenda Hernandez told us about the racial and ethnic disparities and outcomes.
