In the late 1960s a Columbia University academic named Matthew Lipman began to think that by the time kids got to college, they didn't think as well as they could or should for life in a Democratic Society. He believed that if teachers incorporated philosophy into Kindergarten through 12th grade, kids would progressively be taught how to think for themselves. That idea of Philosophy for Children continues today at a three public schools. The program is supported by the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education. Amber Strong Makaiau is the director of Curriculum and Research.

For many, the late Alfred Apaka was the voice of Hawaiian music, through his Waikiki performances, his recordings, and his nationwide radio broadcasts. He died young, in 1960, and his son Jeff has worked to keep his legacy alive ever since. Jeff Apaka is spearheading a drive to get the U.S. Postal Service to create a stamp to mark the centennial of his father’s birth -- as a tribute to the man who was called “the Golden Voice of Hawaii.” He’s with us this morning.

As we heard yesterday, the Kokua Council is suing the state’s department of Health to make sure the state follows a law passed three years ago to upload care home inspection reports. If a bill now in the U.S . House were to pass, states would be mandated to go further. They’s have to create registries of elder abusers and the feed that information to a federal database. Locally, the proposed Senior Citizen Protection Act has support from Scott Spallina, the Supervisor of the Elder Abuse Justice Unit at the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney in Honolulu. Scott Spallina’s with us this morning.

Memories go back a long way in Koloa, Kauai, where the old sugar mill still stands, and older community members share stories of life in the plantation camps.   It’s the hometown Hawaii of hanabuttah days, and it’s coming to life this weekend at the annual Historic Koloa Plantation Days Parade. Al Kaneshiro is the parade’s coordinator, and he talked with us this morning.
