Overcoming Meth-Addict: Latisha
After hearing the HPR -Civil Beat podcast, Hawaii’s New Ice Age, we got a call from a young woman who said that how teens are engaged needed more discussion. Before we could ask her why she thought that, she told us: she had been a teen who used meth and the messages she’d heard just didn’t work. It went beyond the often criticized media campaign of a few years ago by the Meth Project. Latisha- not her real name- says teens need real facts without a lot of hype. She’s a young adult in the mental health field and in school to be a psychologist specializing in adolescent development.

Lisa Fischer knows when to seize the spotlight, and when to yield it. She has a long career as a backing vocalist, on stage and in the studio with some of the very best -- and a career as a recording and performing artist that has given her own share of signature songs. Her story, and that of her peers, was told in the documentary “Twenty Feet from Stardom,” but today she’s in Hawaii to perform with her Grand Baton band, and she’s with us in our studio.

Craig Downs is the Executive Director of Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, a non-profit scientific organization dedicated to increasing the scientific, social and economic knowledge of natural environmental habitats in order to better conserve and restore threatened environmental habitats and resources. He’s in town for the 13th International Coral Reef Symposium.

“They Call Her Ladyfingers,” the story of Betty Loo Taylor: Filmmaker Patricia Gillespie
We’re thinking about careers in music this morning, and how an artist finds ways to keep working as musical tastes swirl around her. For Hawaii pianist Betty Loo Taylor, that has meant playing all kinds of music in all kinds of places -- many of them venues that have never seen a Chinese-American jazz virtuoso before. Her story is told in Patricia Gillespie’s documentary: “They Call Her Ladyfingers, the Betty Loo Taylor Story,” which will be shown next Monday evening at Fresh Cafe in downtown Honolulu. Patricia will also conduct a question-and-answer session after the screening
