Monday, September 29th – from HPR2, it’s The Conversation
You probably think about economic success a lot... but likely not in the terms that make an economists heart go zing. This Thursday economists will gather to consider what they say they rest of us don’t pay enough attention to: the state’s Gross Domestic Product. Lisa Gibson of the Hawaii Economic Association wonders why we don’t focus more on Hawaii’s GDP, as we’re all a part of it.

Makiki Walking Tour: Dean Sakamoto
The late 50’s and early 60’s in Honolulu saw an explosion in the demand for family homes in the city – one that was met with the creation of dozens of new high-rise apartment buildings. The building boom created opportunities for Hawaii architects to build on everything they had learned about urban design. Now Docomomo Hawai‘i, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of modern movement buildings, will lead a walking tour of “Makiki Modern” - nine apartment buildings, built in mid-century, that show how the craft of architecture responds to what society needs. Dean Sakamoto is a Docomomo Hawai‘i board member who joined us this morning.

Constitutional Amendment 4: Joan Lewis, HSTA
“Shall the appropriation of public funds be permitted for the support or benefit of private early childhood education programs, as provided by law, to help the State meet its goal of providing an early learning system for the children of Hawaii?" That’s one of the Constitutional questions you’ll be asked to answer in a little over a month from now. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Hawaii State Teachers Association is encouraging its members - and you - to vote no. HSTA Vice President and Kapolei High School teacher Joan Lewis joined with us this morning to share her thoughts.

UH Kennedy Theatre, Blithe Spirit: Timothy Callais
Playwright and actor Noël Coward was one of those rare artists who can create an entire self-contained world in their work – a world that will forever be identified with them. His characters are English: well-traveled, expensively educated, easily bored, and ultra-sophisticated, breathing the rarefied air of people who never seem to work and always have a cocktail in their hands. Blithe Spirit, a play that weaves light comedy, with the supernatural – is coming to the University of Hawaii’s Kennedy Theatre. Timothy Callais plays Charles in the production, and he joined us this morning in studio.
