Bluegrass is almost as much fun to listen to as it is to play, and that’s not faint praise. One of the defining traits of a good bluegrass band is how much fun they’re having on stage – audiences can’t help being a little bit jealous. The Saloon Pilots have been tearing it up for the better part of a decade now, creating a following that’s as loyal as any band could hope for. They’re taking on new respectability with a concert tomorrow night at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theater, and guitarist Kilin Reece is on hand to play us a sample.

Outdoor Circle, Tree Initiative: Alexandra Avery
If you never focused on Albizia trees before, Tropical storm Iselle gave you lots of reasons: In Puna, the trees downed power lines, stopped traffic, damaged homes and property...and now the Outdoor Circle says the tree should come off the state’s Exceptional Tree List, which is an exceptional position for a group dedicated to saving trees. Proof of that is also showing up in a new tree mapping app developed with UH. Outdoor Circle president Alexandra Avery and I spoke early this morning about how Hawaii should get rid of trees it brought to Hawaii about a century ago.
Intro Music: Changes-Original Mix by Faul & Wad Ad, Pnau

Ho`oponopono Spriritual Retreat, Kauai: Alaya DeNoyelles
The fundamental ideas that guided pre-contact life in Hawaii continue to yield value for the modern age, and one that has special relevance today is ho’oponopono: the ancient Hawaiian way of reconciliation and forgiveness. It’s an essential part of Alaya DeNoyelles’ spiritual practice and she’s about to lead a seven-day retreat on Kauai. It works with the principles of her book, The Sovereignty of Love: Coming Home With Ho’oponopono. She joined the show via phone to tell us about it.
