Sustainable Living, Sustainable Communities: Graham Ellis

Many of us entertain dreams of a simpler life: growing our own food, drawing energy from the sun, reducing our carbon footprint and moving toward a genuinely sustainable way of life. But there are obstacles that aren’t always easy to anticipate, in the form of zoning regulations, building codes and other laws. Graham Ellis, President of Hawaii Sustainable Community Association, is at the forefront of the effort to provide a legal foundation for sustainable living sites, spearheading an initiative to pass a legislative measure called SB2274, “Relating to Sustainable Living.” He joined us by phone this morning.

Where else can you find a combination of world class talent, master classes, and a classical music smackdown? At the 9th Annual Aloha International Piano Festival, of course. Mari Yoshihara is in the studio, here to give us a taste of what it’s like behind the scenes, along with being on the big stage at a major piano players event. She’s a professor and acting chair of American Studies at the University of Manoa who has written several books about classical music titled Musicians from a Different Shore: Asians and Asian Americans in Classical Music. She’s also a dedicated amateur pianist who gives recitals regularly, including this week as part of the Aloha International Piano Festival, and she joined us in the studio this morning.

It seems like a paradox, but many of us find our humanity through our animal companions. There’s something about the way we learn to treat them, and the way they react to us, that connects us to what is best in ourselves. It hurts us to see them neglected or abused, and we rely on the SPCA and others to remain on the front lines to protect them.  Stephanie Ryan is the Founder and President of the Oahu SPCA, and she was with us to chat this morning.

Weddings are a day to remember, and most folks want to commemorate their special day with beautiful photos to cherish forever. But sometimes, the more unique the photos, the better. Special events photographer Nick Pugay was here in the studio to share his story on following his photographic dreams to a full time business, and which of his photo shoots has been the most unusual one to date.
