UH Manoa Fall 2013 Freshman Increases: Dr. Francisco Hernandez
Francisco J. Hernandez is Vice Chancellor for Students at UH Manoa. Dr. Hernandez received his doctoral degree from Stanford University where he specialized in the history of education. Prior to this, he served as Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at the University of California, Santa Cruz; and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UC Berkeley. He has been the Vice Chancellor for Students at UH Manoa since 2006. Among many other departments, he oversees recruitment, admissions, financial aid, and retention and graduation.
Oahu Civic Orchestra: Grant Okamura
Grant Okamura is the conductor the Oahu Civic Orchestra, a community group celebrating 41 years of playing music across the island this year. They will be performing a free community concert Sunday at 4pm (9/22) at the Pearl City Cultural Center.
HPU Military Veterans Center: Justin Vance
Dr. Justin Vance is Interim Dean and Assistant Professor of History for Hawaii Pacific University’s Military Campus Programs. He earned his doctorate degree at the University of Southern California. Dr. Vance has worked at making higher education more accessible to the military and veteran community for the past 11 years. As the current leader of HPU’s efforts to serve the military, he leads a large staff and faculty that is specifically trained and dedicated to helping military and veteran students achieve their educational and professional goals at several sites around Oahu including HPU’s Military Veteran Center Downtown, Hickam, Pearl Harbor, and many others.
HI SK8 Films Showcase: Travis Hancock
Travis Hancock is a 25-year-old from Sunset Beach, Oahu. Along with being an avid skateboarder and active member of Hawaii's skate community, he does freelance writing about skateboarding, arts, and culture. For the past two years he has been the curator of the 'Hi Sk8 Films' showcase going on now at the Doris Duke Theatre.
