Visitor arrivals in March were up 1% compared to the same month in 2020, according to monthly statistics from the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The new data marks the first time in a year that visitor arrivals were up compared to the same month a year prior.

In March 2020, the pandemic began affecting arrivals to the Islands. On March 26, the state implemented a 14-day mandatory travel quarantine - effectively closing tourism.

The bulk of Hawaii’s visitors last month, 429,279, came from the U.S. mainland.

Visitor arrivals from international markets totaled 10,506, with only 1,051 visitors coming from Japan and 326 visitors coming from Canada.

Visitor arrivals for the year, though, are still significantly down - 60% compared to the first three months of 2020.
