HPR's All Things Considered Special Guest: Melvin Seals of the Jerry Garcia Band

bob minkin photography

Hawaii is getting a visit from Melvin Seals and JGB Featuring John Kadlecik, and Melvin took time for an interview with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence. The JGB stands for the Jerry Garcia Band; Melvin Seals played in Jerry’s band for over fifteen years. A four island tour starts Wednesday at the Blue Note before hitting the Kahilu Theatre Thursday, Anaina Hou Community Park next Friday and the VFW Post 3850 in Kihei next Saturday. The San Francisco Bay area musician is known for his whirling Hammond B-3 organ sound, and spent over an hour telling stories of his own background and time with Jerry, as well as running his own band since Jerry's passing in 1995. We offer highlights in this interview feature, and the full conversation can also be found below.
