A high surf warning remains posted for Hawaii Island through 6 a.m. Tuesday as the remnant of what was tropical cyclone Barbara moves past the islands to the south.
A high surf advisory for the east-facing shores of Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Kauai will likely extend into Tuesday.
Surf between 10 and 20 feet is forecast for the Big Island's east shores overnight and dropping through Tuesday, the National Weather Service advised. Strong breaking waves and currents are expected, making for dangerous conditions. Residents and visitors should take precautions.
Meanwhile, the post-tropical cyclone Cosme in the eastern Pacific has weakened to a low remnant low-pressure area.
Hawaii is in the midst of its annual hurricane season. Forecasters say there is a higher than normal chance of a more active season this year than last year. While Barbara is no longer a threat, city officials said the storm is a reminder for residents to prepare for an emergency.
Maui County officials said the effects of Barbara is forecast to last through the middle of the week. In a news release, they advised residents to prepare an emergency kit and conserve water during heavy rain and wind events since these can cause outages affecting water distribution and treatment systems.
