Helping Hand - October 24 2014 full interview with Hawai'i Foodbank

Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations Fridays at 5:30pm. Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization or event in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks in need with All Things Considered local host Dave Lawrence. This week  we’re learning about the Hawai'i Foodbank, with Polly Kauahi, Vice President. Also we'll hear about the event happening November 13th relating to National Philanthropy Day with Sanae Tokumura, President of Solid Concepts and board-member from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Aloha Chapter.

Hunger is affecting large numbers of people in the Aloha State. 1 in 5 people needs the services of the Hawai'i Foodbank -- over 200,000 people weekly, including 40,000 children and many elderly.

National Philanthropy Day is a day that gives  communities the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of giving. Awards are given to those who have accomplished a lot through the spirit of giving. One of the award recipients is Polly Kauahi for her work with the Hawai`i Foodbank. She will receive the “Outstanding Professional Fundraiser” award for her efforts. Her award will be presented on November 13 at the AFP Aloha Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day Conference.
