End of Year Fund Drive Kicks Off December 10

HPR takes to the air December 10-12 with its End of Year Fund Drive. 95% of HPR's $6.4 million operating budget is contributed by individuals, families, and businesses in its community, and during the fund drive, Hawai‘i is invited to contribute to the station’s growth, while taking advantage of donating within the 2019 tax year.

The station currently counts 14,607 members; 54% are Sustaining Members who donate in regular monthly installments.

Sustaining members provide the financial stability for the station to support its statewide network of transmitters, translators, and boosters, and to expand the network where needed. In November, the station announced that it had acquired a transmitter on L?na‘i, which will broadcast HPR-1 to L?na‘i, Moloka‘i, and West Maui. This will provide a strong signal to areas under the terrain shield created by the West Maui mountains.

“It's thanks to the ongoing support from our members that we've been able to thrive and grow this year,” says José A. Fajardo, HPR president and general manager. “As we look ahead to 2020, we invite the community to invest in the station's continued service of providing independent journalism, thought-provoking programming, and expertly curated music for the entire state of Hawai?i.”

For seven years in a row, HPR has earned a four-star rating (the highest possible) from Charity Navigator, which evaluates nonprofits on financial health, accountability, and transparency. HPR was named one of the top 10 public radio stations in the country by the same organization in 2018.

Contributions to HPR may be made online at any time at members.hawaiipublicradio.org, as well as through the free "hpr" mobile app. Fund drive phone lines open at 6:00 a.m. on December 10; the toll free number is (888) 970-8800.

Gough brings more than 15 years of marketing experience to her position at HPR. She most recently served as Director of Marketing at Hawaiian Ola, producer of Hawai‘i-made organic beverages. Prior to that, Gough spent five years at Whole Foods Market, where she oversaw marketing and community engagement for their Hawai‘i stores. She also served as one of the founding co-chairs of Generation Listen, an HPR initiative established with the mission of engaging younger listeners with the station.
