What is the most effective form of civic government? The answer may depend on who you ask, and right now, Maui County is doing the asking. Last December we talked about the formation of a special committee to consider whether Maui County should move to a council-manager system. With six meetings already under its belt, the committee will again meet this Thursday. Members are expecting to hear more public testimony but first this morning, we’ll hear from the Chair Special Committee on County Governance, Tony Takitani.

Most of us hate to think of animals suffering. We see our ability to care for them as an index of our humanity. Yet they often end up on their own and are dropped off every day at the Maui Humane Society. For too many, that’s the last stop, and the Maui Humane Society looks to events like its Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital Spay & Neuter Clinic for Dogs to stem the tide. We talked about it with Humane Society Chief Executive Officer Jerleen Bryant.

The continued success of Donald Trump set off seismic shifts in the Republican Party...Hillary Clinton has a commanding lead among the Democrats...internationally, Turkey dictates an immigration deal to a divided Europe...and, so far, the Syrian ceasefire continues to hold...that’s what news analyst Neal Conan considers this week…he joins us most Tuesdays from his Mac nut farm on the Big Island, and Neal, have you ever seen anything like what's happening with the Republican Party?

There is no pain like the loss of a loved one. Even as it hurts us, we want to honor their memory by living well, in their honor. Bereavement is a struggle for the best of us, and psychologist Joyce Lechuga is offering a workshop in Reconnecting with Life after Loss on Maui. She joins us from there.
