Hawaii’s Farm to School Initiative: Robyn Pfahl
Many parents want their kids to have more locally grown food on the school menu and more may be coming. The DOE is asking farmers to submit their bids and the timeline is short- bids are due by next Wednesday. With two hundred fifty six schools already serving meals that include available locally grown produce, how will farmers know what else to offer to create a predictable income for them - and the fresh locally grown food schools - and especially the kids will want. The DOE feeds a hundred thousand kids and staff daily and waste is a big problem. Robin Pfahl is the Director of the Farm to School Program for the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture.

Kauai’s Soto Zen Bon Festival: Gerald Hirata
The obon festival tradition began, so the story goes, when one of the Buddha’s disciples danced for joy when his mother’s spirit was released from her suffering. That spirit of celebration has never left the centuries-old custom, that’s still going strong after five generation of Japanese in Hawaii. Over the years, Hawaii’s bon dances have taken on their own distinctive style even as they have kept alive the central idea: dancing for joy. Gerald Hirata is at the site of Kauai’s Soto Zen Bon Festival, in the midst of preparations for this summer’s event.

In the recently approved recommendations from the Department of Land and Natural Resources Revocable Permit Task Force, the ideas of fairness, constancy and transparency were among the guiding principles in its fiduciary stewardship of public lands for rent. As the four divisions holding permits import the recommendations, the land division will have the lion’s share of work with its review process. As of April there were three hundred forty permits for the use of public land. We asked DLNR chairperson Suzanne Case to come in to explain how the implementation of the recommendations happens from here.

For the photographer, Kauai can be an embarrassment of riches, with such an abundance of scenery, and such a variety of shooting conditions, that it can overwhelm the photographer taking it all in for the first time. It can be useful to get some guidance in the midst of all those once-in-a-lifetime photo ops, and that’s where Patrick Kelley adventure photography works shops come in…He leads photographers on day-long excursions around the island.
