Native Hawaiian Roll Commission List: Dr. Keli’i Akina

ba_keli_i_akina.mp3

For about a week now, the Native Hawaiian Roll has been online and available to anyone who wants to see it. The release came after a court order following an information request and lawsuit brought by conservative foundation Judicial Watch. Hawaii think tank Grassroot Institute partnered in the investigation.  It stemmed from the controversy over the status of the names placed on the roll and the public funds used to publicize it. So now that the roll is public what's next?

Nuuanu Landslide Event and Hilina Pali Fault: Dr. John R. Smith

The first time you visit the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout, you see massive cliffs stretching for miles. For years, it was assumed that prevailing tradewinds and rain carved out those magnificent basaltic buttresses. Until the research vessel Tuscaloosa discovered a seamount over eighty miles northeast of Oahu, and a debris field southwest of it going all the way back to Oahu on the sea floor. The seamount turned out to be the lavas from the ancient Ko’olau caldera. And that's when researchers realized it wasn’t erosion that made the Pali. It was an almost inconceivable catastrophe, the Nu’uanu landslide event. And the tsunami from that event? Huge!

Making media that matters is not just a slogan. It’s a serious all-girls filmmaking after school program organized by Hawai’i Women in Filmmaking and many other collaborators. Its purpose is to help young women create movies which will bring attention to issues which affect their lives. Issues such as teen runaways. Being a runaway is the most common offense a young woman is charged with in detention. And Grace Schnetzler, who’ll be a senior at La Pietra this year, has just directed the film “Runaway”, which covers that very topic; the hows and whys of running away.
