Proposed Amendments to Honolulu Charter: Natalie Iwasa
Every ten years, the City and County of Honolulu is mandated to review its charter. That’s the City’s governing document often likened to a constitution. The Charter Commission for the City and County of Honolulu canceled its scheduled meeting for today but if you checked the commission’s website, you’d never have known the meeting had even been scheduled. The most recent meeting notice is dated November 6. We called community advocate Natalie Iwasa, also known as Bike Mom to get her take on the cancellation. Natalie Iwasa is a CPA, certified fraud examiner and community advocate. Known as Bike Mom, she frequently testifies at city council and other public meetings.

Kauai Island Grown Artisan Fair: Susan Giuliano
Hawai’i has a thriving artisan community, as people throughout the islands discover the rewards of working with their hands and creating unique designs. Hand-crafted items make thoughtful gifts, too, so Kauai’s Island Grown Artisan Fair is coming along just in time. Susan Giuliano is a member of that community who has been working to put the displays together. Susan is one of the organizers of the Island Grown Artisan Fair, a display of handmade crafts on Kauai this Sunday, 12/20 all afternoon, at the Princeville Community Center.

Making Science Accessible and Compelling: Author Sam Kean
If you’re a devoted fan of The Big Bang Theory, you’ve already had several seasons of proof that the nerd can and does get the girl or guy but getting the science for most people - well that’s more difficult. Writer Sam Kean is working to change that. His books are written more like stories, with good guys, bad guys, plots. They're not technical, and they're written for a general audience which may explain why his books have made him a bestselling author while actually teaching us some science. Sam Kean is a New York Times bestselling author of The Dueling Neurosurgeons, The Disappearing Spoon, and The Violinist’s Thumb. His work has been featured on NPR's “Radiolab,” “All Things Considered,” and “Fresh Air.” He spoke at the Pacifichem conference in Honolulu this week.

Waimea Lighted Parade: Esther Estes
Waimea, Kauai, is a small town with a rich history, and a population dedicated to keeping alive the best of Hawaii’s past. The local population, of about 2,000, is like to increase dramatically this Saturday night when the community turns out for the 21st Annual Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade. Esther Estes is the parade chairperson and she’s on the phone with us from Kauai. The fun takes place Saturday at 6:15 PM at Hofgaard Park, Waimea, Kauai. The Waimea Bridge will close at 5:30 pm and reopen by 8 pm.
