Mediation Instead of Litigation: Maryann Sasaki

Over 150 years ago, Abraham Lincoln wrote in his notes for a lecture: “Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser — in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.” Those words -which may or may not have actually been delivered -still resonate with lawyers advocating for mediation- including Maryann Sasaki. She’s an associate at Clay Chapman, IwamuraPulice and Nervell and in an article she co-wrote for this month’s Hawaii Bar Journal makes the case for mediation.

Schoolyard Bullies quickly learn that one of the fastest ways to injure their victims is not with punches, but with words. Mental bruises linger long after blows to the body have healed. Our next guest knows this first hand, and he’s been working for years to shake off the results of childhood verbal assaults. You might even say that he's earned a black belt in spoken self defense. Word Artist Slam Poet Shane Koyczan and his poem “To This Day” have received millions of hits on YouTube. We talked earlier about how he turned himself into a poet.

Now think about everything you'll be able to accomplish in the next decade… Well, that's pretty much what it's like if you're Maui Singer Songwriter Lily Meola.
