Honolulu police say they shot a man who allegedly charged at officers with a knife near Ala Moana Shopping Center on Monday night.

The Honolulu Police Department said officers responded to reports of a knife-wielding man near Kona Street around 11 p.m. A 30-year-old man told police that another man, 48, threatened him with a knife.

When officers ordered the 48-year-old man to drop his knife, police say he charged at the officers who fired their weapons.

Paramedics treated the suspect for multiple gunshot wounds and transported him to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police have opened a first-degree attempted murder investigation.

Honolulu police are expected to release more information at a 2 p.m. press conference on Tuesday.
