Starting June 3, the city plans to switch from monthly pickups of bulky items to scheduled collection appointments in neighborhoods from Foster Village to Hawai?i Kai, including Waik?k?. Monthly collections will continue in other areas of O?ahu.
The bulky item collection pilot project aims to improve management and efficiency of large item collection, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said in a news release.
"This targeted approach will reduce driving distances, which decreases fuel consumption and emissions, ultimately saving us time and money while also being more environmentally friendly," Caldwell said.
The new procedure covers more than 70,000 single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings, which were sent mailers about the change.
Residents in the covered areas can begin scheduling online appointments for bulky item collection on May 15. Those who can't make online appointments can call the city Department of Environmental Services at 768-3486.
Single-family homes can scheduled for collection up to five bulk items per appointment. Multi-unit residential buildings can have up to 20 bulky items picked up for each appointment.
Items will need to be placed curbside. The city has a list of items acceptable for collection.
Bulky item tonnage has increased by 80 percent since 2008, according to Environmental Services Director Lori Kahikina. She said the city wants to encourage residents to consider reusing items rather than disposing of them.
