New Hearing Date Set For Kaneshiro Impeachment Petition

Casey Harlow

A new hearing date has been set for a civil case aiming to impeach Honolulu City Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro.

Judge Jeff Crabtree held a hearing on a petition created by businessman Tracy Yoshimura calling for the impeachment of Kaneshiro.

Crabtree heard updates on the City's plan, as well as the status of verifying signatures from the online petition.

Attorney Bill McCorriston called Yoshimura's effort to impeach Kaneshiro a "vast overreach."

"We will fight it vigorously," said McCorriston. "One of the issues you saw in court today was the fact that the ordinance that provides for the impeachment proceeding is devoid of any mechanics. There's no rules. There's no procedures.

So it's unfortunate the judge is going to have to make these things up as he goes along."

Yoshimura's lawyer, Keith Kiuchi, says he will file an amended petition with the City Clerk next week with verified signatures.

The court will meet again on April 30th - time enough to give all parties a chance to address issues related to the case.
