Reggae musician Pato Banton is back in Hawaii. He took time to speak with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence about his fascinating upbringing in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and how he was working around live music by eight years old thanks to his stepfather. His tour starts tonight at the Blue Note, before hitting Tahiti Nui on Kauai and then wrapping up on the Big Island in Honokaa.
In this conversation, Pato Banton explains how he benefited from a chance encounter with The English Beat when he entered a talent contest as a young man, helping to set a course for his career. Experiences with UB40 and Sting also factor into his story, and he shares critical encounters with both.
