60 years of We are Family!

Honolulu, HI:  Join us on Thursday, October 6th at 6 pm at the University of Hawai’i Manoa at the Hawaiian Studies-Kamakakūokalani Center, 2645 Dole Street, HNL, HI 96822 (Open air Auditorium) for the “work-in-progress” screening and panel discussion with our amazing Brandy Lee alongside her sisters as they share their resilience from 1960s to today; sixty years of past, present, and future as māhū in Hawai’i and abroad.  

The Glades Project threads the red-light district of Chinatownʻs past when in 1963 the Hawai’i Legislature passed a law titled #175, known as “Dressed-to-Deceive” which in less than a year, led to a mandate that any persons wearing clothing of the opposite sex had to identify themselves with a button/label indicating “I AM A BOY” or “I AM A MAN.”  

The Glade Show Lounge opened in the Summer/Fall of 1963. By 1965 it became known as the place "Where Boys Will Be Girls." The female impersonation act burst forth, loud and proud with dazzling fanfare. This was the māhū's safe space to explore and express their true selves. The Glades Project explores in this extraordinary place, the glamour, the showmanship, the people, their alienation from the outside and acceptance from within.
