Songs of Love: A Musical Journey Through Korean History in Hawai‘i
Songs of Love from Hawai‘i is a musical drama weaving three moving stories from Hawai‘i’s Korean diaspora.
The film opens with Their Footprints, exploring 121 years of Korean immigration through rare archival footage. It then portrays the life of Lim Ok Soon, a picture bride, with a poignant performance by Grammy-winning violist Richard Youngjae O'Neil. The film concludes with a tribute to the souls of Molokaʻi's Kalaupapa, featuring stirring renditions of “Aloha Oe” by virtuoso violinists Ignace "Iggy" Jang and Chee-Yun, and slack-key guitarist Keola Beamer.
Having premiered at the 43rd Hawaii International Film Festival and airing on PBS Hawai‘i, the film is now experiencing a successful nationwide theatrical release in Korea through CGV, attracting over 10,000 attendees in just two weeks. This special event offers an extraordinary opportunity to connect with these moving immigrant stories, featuring a live performance by renowned violinist Chee-Yun with pianist Jonthan Korth, musicians featured in the film.
The program will begin with the live performance, followed by the film and a post-screening discussion with Jinyoung Lee, Gary Pak, Chee-Yun, and Jonathan Korth.
