Manoa Village Gallery presents Summer of Love 2021

Manoa Village Gallery 2964 E Manoa Rd., Suite 1 Honolulu, HI Honolulu – Mānoa Village Gallery is launching a series of three events under the banner “Summer of Love”. Phase one, entitled “Rainbow Bridge Exhibition” begins Monday, June 21, with preview shows by invitation beginning June 18. “This first phase is a 1960’s rock ‘n roll tour as seen through the lens of a camera. It captures the raw iconographic music scene that defined the era both here in Hawaii and on the mainland. It features the work of four artists whose photography celebrates musicians in their element,” says founder and managing director Catherine L. Cooke. Photographer, curator, and collector, Michael D. Horikawa, will showcase his own original photos and prints, including classic shots of Mick Jagger, Carlos Santana, and Rod Stewart, taken from live concerts performed here in Hawaii. Veteran graphic designer Neal Izumi’s photojournalistic styled images feature concert crowds in 1960s San Francisco, including his first-time exhibited photos of the infamous Rolling Stones concert at Altamont Speedway. Photographer Dave Hori offers his photos from early 1970s San Francisco, including Bob Dylan and The Band, Joni Mitchell & Neil Young from the Winterland concert made famous by Martin Scorseseʻs film “The Last Waltz”; as well as stage photography of the Stones and Who. Rainbow Bridge is dedicated to the photographer and video artist Jim Wiseman who passed this year. Jim’s photos of Jimi Hendrix taken in St. Louis in November of 1968, are rare glimpses into a creative genius and the point of inspiration for Jim’s career that followed, including his work with Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead. Additionally, a treasure trove of posters from the archives of private collections, as well as press photos, and a video installation tribute to Jim Wiseman will be on display. Rainbow Exhibition is curated by filmmaker Robert Bates. Summer of Love’s second phase, “Naked Beauty” opens Monday, July 19th. The third and final phase, “The Ultimate High” opens Monday, August 16th. The sun sets on this Summer of Love Tour on the first day of Fall, September 21st. UPDATE: Framed art is available in very limited quantities. Rainbow Bridge is curated by R. A.
