Ernie Pyle Memorial Foundation: Jerry Maschino
70 years ago on April 18, 1945, Ernie Pyle lost his life in the war in the Pacific. If you're wondering who Pyle was, you've just answered the question why the foundation named in his honor exists. Long before up close and personal interviews became ubiquitous, he told the stories of the war only through soldiers eyes, everyday for three years. Jerry Maschino is one of the directors of the Ernie Pyle Foundation and he's in Honolulu for a remembrance and dedication of a memorial stone at Punchbowl where Pyle is buried. We sat down and I asked him how he'd introduce Ernie Pyle to a generation that might be totally unfamiliar with his work.

HI Book & Music, Romance Novelist: Jane Porter
The romance novel endures, for generation after generation -- and although the basic story outlines remain in place, it’s a still-evolving genre. Novelist Jane Porter, author of more than a dozen popular Harlequin romances, grew up taking her own flights of the imagination and has made a career out of encouraging her readers to do the same. She’s coming to the Hawaii Book and Music Festival this month.

Income Group Tax Cuts: Jenny Lee
It's the last gasp of tax season... federal returns are due tomorrow and state taxes on Monday. But beyond current filings, a community group is concerned about what may happen next year. Jenny Lee is a staff attorney at the Hawai'i Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice, and she says the expiration of the highest marginal rates and the itemized deduction cap means taxpayers in the top fifth will share a tax cut of $43 million. Meanwhile, relief for low income filers may only amount to a maximum tax cut of $6.5 million. That, she says, would keep Hawaii on the list of the worst states for taxing families in poverty.

Men In Grey Suits, Surf Rock Band: Robbin Henley Jr.
Most folks thought surf music was a passing fad when it came along in the 1960’s, but then again they probably thought that about surfing, too… and we know how that ended up. Today the twangy instrumental rock ‘n’ roll pioneered by Dick Dale, The Ventures, and a bunch of California bands lives on in Hawaii in the form of Men In Grey Suits, which might best be described as a new-generation surf band. Robbin Henley Jr., guitarist and guiding spirit, and he joined the show to tell us about it. Men in Grey Suits’ latest album is called “Return of the Cnidarians” and they will perform in support of it at Hawaiian Brian’s on April 24th at 9pm.
