The comedy Harold and Maude, a decidedly offbeat story about an age-inappropriate romance, asks us whether love should have any boundaries. When the movie came out in 1971, it caught on with a young audience that was tired of being told who it could fall in love with.   Harold and Maude lives on as a stage play opening this week at Manoa Valley Theater, and Victoria Gail White, who  plays the part of Maude in the production, joined The Conversation in our studios to talk about it. The play opens this Thursday and runs through February 7th.

  • Outro Music: If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out by Cat Stevens

Over the past week or so, Iran met the conditions laid down in the nuclear deal. It also captured and released 10 American sailors and swapped five jailed Americans for seven Iranians imprisoned in the United States... but if those were three steps forward, there was one step back. At the same time that the U.N., the European Union, and the U.S. dropped many sanctions as part of the agreement, the U.S. imposed some new ones, for Iran's defiance on ballistic missile tests. News analyst Neal Conan joined the show to comment.

The Hippocratic Oath, in its various forms, has governed the practice of medicine for more than two thousand years, and it places a heavy responsibility upon those who take it.   “With regard to healing the sick... I will take care that they suffer no hurt or damage.”   But has the modern practice of medicine been tainted by the demands of the marketplace?   Arnold Jacobson is a retired physician whose 13-year experience in pharmaceutical development gave him a close-up view of the ways commerce and the ethical demands of medicine can come into conflict.  His one-act play, Shadows of Hippocrates, is coming to the 2016 Maui Fringe Festival, and he joined the show to tell us more about it. The one-act play will be performed for the first time on January 24th at the Iao Theater in Wailuku.

  • Intro Music: Balance by Ken Gioffre
  • Outro Music: Corea, Adventures of Hippocrates, Pt 4 by Orion String Quartet
