The Honolulu Board of Water Supply is taking to the airwaves to ask residents to conserve water.

The board is airing television and radio public service announcements featuring Manager and Chief Engineer Ernie Lau.

In the spots, Lau points to water contamination from the Red Hill fuel facility and below-average rainfall as reasons to cut consumption by at least 10%.

Board of Water Supply Spokesperson Kathleen Pahinui says voluntary conservation now will reduce the need for mandatory restrictions this summer.

The department began asking users to reduce their water usage by 10% back in March.
