A Honolulu Rate Commission plan would increase TheBus and TheHandi-Van daily fares for the next fiscal year, and add a residency requirement for discounted fares.

If the Honolulu Rate Commission passes their fare proposal, a single bus ride for adults will change from $2.75 to $3. A single bus fare for adults 65 and older, and disability cardholders will increase from $1 to $1.50.

The commission also plans to restrict deeply discounted fares for adults 65 and older, disabled, and low-income riders to Hawaiʻi residents only.

Nonresidents would still receive a discount from the adult full fare — similar to most transit systems across the nation — but residents would receive a bigger discount.

The commission plans to vote on the fare changes at the Feb. 8 meeting from 2:30 p.m. up to 4:30 p.m. in the Mission Memorial Auditorium near Honolulu Hale. Interested parties may participate in person or online.

The link to attend the meeting virtually can be found here. Written testimonies can be emailed to ratecomm@honolulu.gov or hchee@honolulu.gov, or faxed to (808) 768-4730.
