This week on Helping Hand, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence speaks with Aloha Independent Living Hawaii, and Executive Director Roxanne Bolden. The nonprofit specializes in giving persons with disabilities the choice of where to receive independent living services. A critical way they can help is to find support services that are sometimes under the radar which could be invaluable in keeping people living on their own: information and referral, peer counseling, advocacy, independent living skills training and transition among them. They even have a traumatic brain injury sewing group that used their time to make some gigantic blankets for elephants at the Save Elephant Foundation’s Elephant Nature Park in Thailand. See these fantastic gifts of aloha below.
Helping Hand is a weekly feature as part of All Things Considered during its afternoon drive statewide broadcast every Friday and then archived online here. Each week, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on a topic, organization or event that offers assistance to people with disabilities and people and animals that are among the most vulnerable.

Thanks to the members of the Aloha Independent Living Hawaii traumatic brain injury group for their selfless act of making these blankets for elephants that truly could use a helping hand. Bravo and thank you so much for taking the time to share your aloha, and make a valuable contribution to the greater good.
