CAB Community Issues List 2019

The Community Advisory Board (CAB) is an adjunct to HPR's Board of Directors, and provides feedback to HPR management on station programming and community outreach opportunities. One of their key functions is to provide insight into important community issues for our news team to consider. As of July 3, 2019, the following items had been identified by the CAB. This list is not meant to be inclusive or in priority order.

  • Education Issues: Hawai‘i School System, talent/brain drain, early childhood
  • Healthcare Issues: Accessibility, Costs, Availability of medical professionals, mental health
  • Native Hawaiian Culture: Addressing issues/stories with the Native Hawaiian perspective, degradation of the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle, cultural vs economic development
  • Economic Issues: Economic disparity, poverty, unemployment, unions, cost of living, living wages, wealth gap, economic development, economic diversity, entrepreneurship
  • Homelessness: solutions for diversity of population
  • Housing: Affordable housing, Vacation rentals
  • Environmental Issues: Water, Loss of habitat, impact of tourism, trash
  • Community Planning: transportation, housing,
  • Immigration and Assimilation: Micronesian racism
  • Local Food and Agriculture
  • Arts and Culture
  • Tourism: Impact/cost of tourism to economy, environment, services, and culture, vacation rentals
  • Climate Change: impact of storms, sea levels
  • Elderly Population: availability of services, including support for families
  • 2020 Census: education, impact of census
  • Civic: voting, civic and community engagement
  • Renewable Energy:  solar panels, Hawai‘i’s potential to lead
