Helping Hand - Easter Seals & The Harlem Globetrotters

Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide, and online here. Each Friday afternoon at 5:30 during All Things Considered, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization, event or topic in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks among the most vulnerable in society. It's a segment presented by All Things Considered Honolulu Host Dave Lawrence. This week we’re learning about a very special program from Easter Seals, and doing it with The Harlem Globetrotters.

We went on-location, recording this unusual segment at the McCully Gym in Honolulu with wheelchair basketball teammates who started playing together via their involvement with the Youth Enrichment Services (YES) program from Easter Seals. While learning more about that program, we were privileged to watch some of those wheelchair basketball players on the court with members of the Harlem Globetrotters -- who themselves got into wheelchairs for this once-in-a-lifetime event! The Harlem Globetrotters are at the Blaisdell Arena Saturday and Sunday. Slick Willie Shaw and Sweet J Ekworomadu from the team generously took to the court, and as they play, we got to speak with Jennifer Norton, Easter Seals Hawai’i O’ahu Youth Services Program Manager & Jennifer La’a, the Easter Seals Hawai'i Director of Youth & Adult Programs.
