Hawaiʻi Island police and federal authorities are investigating after a man building homemade fireworks died following an explosion at his house. Police say the man was severely injured by an explosion early Saturday at his home in the Puna district.

Police charged a man with murder after finding a “badly burned” body in a car in a remote part of the Big Island over the weekend.

Sam Kapoi, 35, of Waianae on Oʻahu was accused of distributing more than 26 pounds of methamphetamine over the course of nine months on Oʻahu and the Big Island.

A Michigan couple filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Hawaiʻi County police Wednesday in the fatal shooting of their 31-year-old son Daniel Buckingham in June. Buckingham was squatting in an unoccupied house in Hilo when he was shot 13 times by police. The lawsuit alleges officers did not announce their identity before drawing their weapons.

Hawaiʻi police say the man officers shot and killed last week didn't have a permanent address and was originally from Michigan. Police say Daniel Buckingham cut an officer with a large knife Friday when officers responded to an alarm at a Hilo home that was supposed to be empty.
