WAILUKU — A Maui police officer has been arrested for drug-related offenses and conspiracy, officials said.

Daniel Imakyure, 39, was arrested and released Friday, The Maui News reported.

The Maui Police Department officer was arrested on offenses including promoting a dangerous drug in the first degree, criminal conspiracy, criminal attempt and attempting to aid another, authorities said.

Imakyure had not been charged as of Saturday, officials said.

Imakyure was released pending further investigation and placed on administrative leave with pay, but with his police powers removed, Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu said in a video statement.

"I want to reassure the public that any wrongdoing by any of my officers will not be tolerated," Faaumu said. "Any Maui Police Department employee that violates the law will be held accountable both criminally and internally."

Imakyure has served with the police department headquartered in Wailuku since 2009.

The police Criminal Investigation Division received information earlier this year suggesting an officer was connected to drug-related activity on Molokai.

Maui detectives executed search warrants for cellphones, computers and lockers, leading to Imakyure's arrest Friday, police said.

"The investigation is ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, we will present our evidence in court," Faaumu said. "We will not present our case on television, in print or on social media."
