:11—Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978): Sym. No. 1, 1934, first move., Loris Tjeknavorian, Armenian Philarmonic [ASV 858].

---SECOND HALF HOUR---

:38—Kurt Weill (1900-1950): Sym. No. 1, finale, 1921, Marin Alsop, Bournemouth Symphony [Naxos 557481].

:45—Robert Klyne Headley (1906-1995): Symphony for Radio, 1946, Dmitry Yablonskuy, Russian Philharmonic [Naxos 559300]. West Virginia-born, but raised in California, his teaching posts later taking him first to Seattle, then to Vancouver.

---THIRD HALF HOUR---

:04—Meredith Willson (1902-1984): Sym. No. 1, “A Symphony of San Francisco,” third move., 1936, William Stromberg, Moscow Symphony [Naxos 559006]. From the composer of “The Music Man.”

:09--Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978): Sym. No. 3, 1947, Loris Tjeknavorian, Armenian Philarmonic [ASV 858]. An utterly unique work, it uses a huge orchestra with 15 trumpets beyond the three regular ones. Oh, and an organ.

---FOURTH HALF HOUR---

:30—Francis Chagrin (1905-1972): Sym. No. 2, 1971, scherzo, Martyn Brabbins, BBC Symphony [Naxos 571371]. Studied under Paul Dukas and Nadia Boulanger.

:34—Stephen Albert (1941-1992): Sym. No. 1, “RiverRun,” 1985, excerpt, Paul Polivnick, Russian Philharmonic [Naxos 559257]. Inspired by “Finnegan’s Wake,” this symphony won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Interesting in small clips but I heard it live and was underwhelmed.

:37—Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006): Sym. No. 8, finale, 1978, Andrew Penny, National Symphony of Ireland [Naxos 552001].

(TRICK QUESTION: WHO WROTE THIS SYMPHONY?)

:47—Nino Rota (1911-1979): Sym. No. 1, scherzo, 1940, Mazio Conti, Torino Phlharmonic [Chandos 10546]. The same man who scored “La dolca vita” and “The Godfather.” Use what fits.
