May Day Lei Day at Waimea Valley
Immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of Hawai‘i as you celebrate May Day Lei Day a beloved tradition that encapsulates the spirit of aloha at Waimea Valley. Embark on a journey of creativity and craftsmanship as you participate in lei making. Learn from skilled artisans who will guide you through the intricate process of crafting your own lei. We invite guests to participate as guest judges in our staff lei contest and vote for your favorite lei in the Recyclable Lei category. Enjoy a guided walk through our lei garden and Hawaiian Flora garden to learn more about the botanical wonders and traditional uses of natural resources used to make lei. Grab a seat at the Upper Meadow nestled between the archaeological agricultural terraces and watch a special performance by ukulele musicians and hula from 11 am – 12 pm. Lei displays will be presented at the Visitor Center and Hale Ho‘ike two of the main entries into the Valley to learn more about different lei methods and its history.
We encourage all visitors to wear traditional lei around the neck or lei po‘o style, on the head, and receive free entry into Waimea Valley. Lei walks, demonstrations and performances on the Upper Meadow are included in admission. May Day Lei Day is also Keiki Wednesday at Waimea Valley offering free admission to kama‘āina and military children 0-12 years old.
