Ka Moloka’i Makahiki Festival started in January 1981 to involve the island's keiki in Hawaiian tradition and culture. Lana Corpuz was raised on Maui and Molokaʻi where her grandparents live. She moved to Molokaʻi several years ago to work at ʻĀina Momona, a community organization dedicated to sustainability.

The festival is one of her projects. She’s been up close and involved a number of times in this closing tribute to Makahiki season. They do the full games and everything on Molokaʻi, the game kōnane, tug of war hukihuki, and more.

This interview aired on The Aloha Friday Conversation on Nov. 12, 2021.

Noe Tanigawa covered art, culture and ideas for two decades at Hawaiʻi Public Radio.
