  Let the battle begin! A new round over what to do about the Waikiki Natatorium has been touched off with a new alternative for a swim basin replacing the crumbling walls with a fiberglass mess. Former war veterans weighed in on the controversy over the weekend on veterans day...against the backdrop of the war memorial and ceremonies held there.

We talked to two veterans who remember swimming at the salt water pool when they were children. Retired Lt. Col. Curtis Manchester shared his memories.

Tourists in Waikiki are weathering the storm as Hurricane Lane moves closer to O’ahu.   HPR’s Wayne Yoshioka reports.   

There are an estimated 70-80-thousand tourists in Waikiki on any given day.  Elaine D’Sa from San Francisco is sitting on the beach under cloudy skies and a slight drizzle, looking out at a choppy ocean.

The State Department of Health issued an all clear notification for Ala Moana Beach Park and Waikiki beach.  Keith Kawaoka, Deputy Director for the Hawaii Department of Health made the announcement. 

More than 500,000 gallons of water overflowed from manholes near Ala Moana Center and spilled into nearby parks and waterways.  A faulty water pump and miscommunication over repairs are being blamed for the flood.

Waikiki Beach Replenishment Ordinances Signed into Law

Waikiki Beach loses tons of sand each year and obtaining funding from the state legislature to replenish it takes at least a couple of years.  Today, two City and County ordinances were signed into law to enable surrounding businesses to contribute to maintaining the beach.   HPR’s Wayne Yoshioka reports.
